Media 7 this week – Murdoch on Trial.
Murdoch on Trial.
The fortunes of Rupert Murdoch’s global media empire have gone from bad to worse as public hearings in the UK reveal fresh scandals and evidence of malpractice, unethical behaviour and criminality by News International journalists.
To limit the damage, Murdoch had to close The News of the World… he’s withdrawn his bid for the satellite network BSkyB and he and his son James have removed themselves from their executive roles and boardroom seats.
The media mogul is under investigation in the United States and in Australia there are claims that News Limited newspapers are deeply biased against the Gillard Government and that Murdoch employees tried to influence the vote of a former Federal Member of Parliament, Senator Bill O’Chee.
This week Media7 examines the troubled world of Citizen Murdoch and interviews concerned journalists in Britain, Australia and New Zealand.
James Robinson, The Guardian journalist who is covering the Leveson Inquiry in Britain will be joining Russell Brown via satellite.
We will also be talking to Martin Hirst the former AUT academic who is now at Deakin University in Victoria.
Hirst appeared before a parliamentary inquiry with claims and evidence of systematic political bias on the part of the Murdoch newspapers, which have the lion’s share of the Australian newspaper market.
Tim Pankhurst former Dominion Post Editor and Chairman of the NZ Media Freedom Committee will be discussing the Prime Minister’s recent observations that the events of “cuppa-gate” presaged a move towards News of the World journalistic standards arriving in New Zealand.
We will also be asking him to comment on the Labour Party’s broadcasting policy which appears to favour some sort of “super-regulator” to cover radio, television and newspapers.
