Tonight on Media 7 – MEGAUPLOAD…

Media7 starts its 2012 season with a thorough examination of the media and legal circus surrounding Megaupload, the apprehension of its principal Kim Dotcom and his associates.

Dotcom’s spectacular arrest, at the behest of the United States F.B.I., involved a small army of uniformed NZ Police Officers, the dog and Armed Offenders’ Squads as well as a police helicopter.

It received huge local and worldwide coverage.

The story was quickly sensationalised by extensive use of the numerous images which Mr. Dotcom had posted on line.

Newspaper editors and TV journalists barely had to stir from their computer terminals to find evidence of the portly German’s displays of wealth, spectacular consumption and a surprising lack of good taste.

The allegations against Dotcom and his colleagues have yet to be tested in court but already his sites have been shut down and his business is being dismantled.

Serious questions have been raised as to whether some of the material published and the actions of the media fly in the face of the ancient principle of “the presumption of innocence”.

On  Media7 this week, media lawyer Rick Shera and music producer Simon Grigg discuss the media coverage and the phenomenon of Megaupload, which has millions of subscribers worldwide.

Russell Brown will also be talking by satellite with Australian movie producer Neil Peplow, who had one of his movies pirated (not by Megaupload).

Peplow only discovered the extent of his loss when it became known that almost two-million people had downloaded the film from the internet.

Media7 is recorded in front of a live audience in the TVNZ Auckland Television Centre on Wednesday evenings and is first broadcast at 9.05pm on Thursdays on TVNZ 7.
